DESIGN JUNKIES: 'UNDER THE HORIZON' CHANDELIER & DINING TABLE by CRAIG GUY
Emma Eagle of Mr. Bigglesworthy was invited to contribute to the new local TV series Design Junkies as a judge alongside established designer Tim Webber.
Mr. Bigglesworthy are now proud to present ‘Under the Horizon’ a chandelier & dining table suite, the winning design by Wellington-based designer Craig Guy for Design Junkies.
Guided by a search for new forms and shapes, ‘Under the Horizon’ is an inspired interpretation of our land, Aotearoa.
This bespoke object of art and design has been holistically crafted from tubular steel, reclaimed kauri, pounamu tinted resin and polypropylene.
The angular formation of the ‘long white cloud’ chandelier is suspended over a substantial kauri dining table, split into two sections reminiscent of New Zealand’s North and South islands.
The chandelier and table frame were crafted with unused deadstock scheduled for recycling, intercepted from the Wellington steel tube mills.
Incorporating recycled native Kauri floorboards salvaged from a old court building in Wellington, the aged, natural flaws of the tabletop panels are filled with a pounamu resin inlay.
During the day, the touch of green on the tabletop is a subtle and elegant reference to the special natural materials of New Zealand. By night, the luminous powder added to the resin adds an element of theatre to the design, with a glowing reminder of the natural mana and essence in the land.
